Rev. Nathan Newman serves as a minister to Members of Congress with Ministry to State (MTS). Nathan was born and raised in Huntsville, AL by parents who showed him what it looks like to follow Jesus – through their faithful influence and the prayers of many in his local church, God saved him at a young age. He attended Covenant College where he met his wife Jessica, a native of Holland, Michigan, and later earned his Master of Divinity at Reformed Theological Seminary in Washington, DC. Since 2014, he and Jessica have lived on Capitol Hill in the District.
Prior to joining MTS, Nathan served on the pastoral staff of McLean Presbyterian Church for nearly a decade. There he ministered to a grace-filled congregation that included members of congress, cabinet officials, and members of the executive branch and their families. In addition to his primary responsibility at MTS, Nathan also serves as an Air Force Reserve chaplain in the rank of captain at Arlington National Cemetery. Chaplain Newman is endorsed by the Presbyterian and Reformed Commission on Chaplains (PRCC). Nathan’s wife Jessica has worked in DC since 2008 and currently manages the day-to-day operations of a U.S. Senator’s office. Together, they are having the time of their lives raising their daughters Della and Pippa.
Formative experiences for Nathan include growing up on baseball fields across North Alabama, a close-knit family who was always there to watch and encourage, wrestling through the loss of his younger brother to cancer, and being shaped by a handful of mentors. Throughout, gospel courage and vulnerability have been themes that have animated his life and ministry. In his free time, you might find him playing golf, cooking for friends, reading the news or – at his happiest – enjoying his family.
