Mark Becker – MNA Disaster Response, Regional Specialist, South Central Region (TX & OK)

The Past…

Mark’s first involvement with storm cleanup was back in 1994 when he joined a volunteer team to clean out flooded homes in Beaumont, TX. For the next 26 years, Mark and his wife, Suzan, responded as volunteers following storms in Texas, Virginia, Louisiana, and Mississipi.

The first time that they served as disaster response site managers was after Hurricane Harvey in 2017 which caused  major flooding in areas of Texas including Houston and Katy.  During prior storms they traveled to the impacted areas, but this time the storm hit near them so they hosted volunteer teams that came in to help by providing housing, meals, and projects during their stay.

Mark finished his first career as an engineer in April of 2020, and by September Mark and Suzan were serving as site managers in Lake Charles, LA following Hurricane Laura.  Their travel trailer provided an ideal way to relocate to the disaster zone for the 3 months that the initial cleanup occurred.  They coordinated teams and managed the overall operation of the recovery site. It was while they were there that Mark came on staff with MNA Disaster Response.

The following year Mark and Suzan were site managers after a hurricane that hit the New Orleans area and stayed in Metairie in the Grace Presbyterian Church parking lot (in their travel trailer).  See the video that was made after this storm response – it does a great job of explaining what we do and why we do it.

The Present…

Mark now serves as a Regional Specialist, along with Rick Lenz, to support all of Texas and Oklahoma, along with the Joplin, MO, western AR, and Shreveport LA areas.  We contact PCA churches in areas impacted by storms to determine if any damage has occurred and if assistance is needed.  Most of these storms cause damage due to high winds or area flooding but we have provided assistance following other types of storms like the major freeze in early 2021 which caused 14 PCA churches in the region to be impacted by water line breakage in their church buildings and the homes of their congregants.

The Future…

Mark is available to share information at churches and presbyteries about the disaster response ministry, various ways to get involved, and the experience he and Suzan had while serving following major storms.  He can provide mini-track loader training for presbyteries, churches, and other PCA ministries to help with preparation for the certain coming disasters. These are a great tool for chainsaw teams to move logs and brush.
